2021 Coastview Syrah
Coastview is one of our favorite Rhone vineyards and is also one of the most beautiful because of its terraced layout. Sitting atop the Gabilan Mountains east of Monterey at about 2200 feet, Coastview straddles the line between warm and cool climate characteristics, experiencing the cooling effects from the Pacific Ocean plus the stress of growing on the top of a hill. Soils are granitic in nature with a little bit of limestone. On the nose, we sense the cool climate characteristics we love: smoke, garrigue, green peppercorn, yet the palette is all warm climate: blueberry and plum mixed with a sinewy texture. The long tannins have you rolling your tongue around the top of your mouth leaving you yearning for more. This bootstrapper of a Syrah is bold yet refined; a wine we’ve all come to love.

Production notes
The grapes were hand-harvested at optimal ripeness. They were then hand-sorted and destemmed. We cold-soaked the grapes for 5 days to extract color, and then fermentation kicked off spontaneously. Daily pump-overs and punch-downs were performed for cap management. When the fermentation was dry, the grapes were pressed and put into 50% new French oak barrels plus 50% neutral barrels (all 228L barriques) to age. The wine was racked 5 months after harvest and then returned to barrel for another 15 months. The blend was then assembled prior to bottling. We bottled this wine in August of 2023, unfined and unfiltered.
