2020 Coastview Syrah
Our 2020 Coastview Syrah is harvested from the same vineyard as the 2019 Reserve Grenache as discussed above, so you may now realize how special this location is to us. This vineyard designated Syrah from Coastview Vineyard has been a favorite of ours since our first release from the 2016 vintage. The intensity of warm summer days and the cooling influence of Monterey Bay at night allows this vineyard to make powerful wines showcasing the great expression of this vineyard's climate and terroir. It offers notes of rich mulberry, blackberry, hints of tobacco, and a savory meatiness on the nose; the dark-berried fruit continues on the palate while mixed with baking spices, clove, and olive tapenade. The long tannins have you rolling your tongue around the top of your mouth leaving you yearning for more. This bootstrapper of a Syrah is bold yet refined; a wine we’ve all come to love.
Sourced from Coastview Vineyard in the Gabilan Mountains AVA in Monterey County, this vineyard-designate Syrah was picked at optimum ripeness as we determined by measured parameters such as brix, pH, and TA, and also its phenolic ripeness, i.e., taste. After 2 days of cold soaking, lots were again tested for brix, TA, and pH. Cold soak lasted up to 7 days, during which time pump-overs were performed twice a day. Fermentation usually kicks off on its own. In some cases yeast is added to assist in fermentation and in some cases it is not necessary. After roughly 25 days on the skins the wine is gently pressed into tank for 24 hours, then gravity-filled into barrels where it remains for 18 months, with monthly topping. There is no racking and minimal SO2 additions.
